More individual cinematography examples!

Image
These photographs explore varied moments and environments from a garden centre to a graveyard, each image possesses its own narrative, mood and perspective. Together they represent my attention to detail, creative eye and visual approaches to cinematography. This image was taken within a garden centre, to me the lotus flower emerging from the stem represents new life or emotional development as it emerges through the frame. This image was taken within the Butterfly sanctuary  in Sheffield, to me the butterfly's wings resemble that of a stained glass window; delicate and fragile.   This photograph to me creates a moving end of day stillness, as though the moment is stopped between dusk and night. Similar to the last it creates a shifted moment between dusk and night, however with the moon being visible on a light background it could create a sense of abnormality, as most of the time within film the moon is seen in complete darkness. With this image I wanted to bring ...

Psychological Analysis Of The Film SPLIT ~ Directed by M. Night Shyamalan (2016)

Psychological analysis of the film split~ The film Split, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, presents a complex portrayal of Kevin Wendell Crumb, who is shown to experience dissociative identity disorder (DID). M. Night Shyamalan uses this disorder to symbolise the psychological aspects of the disorder rather than to depict it clinically. They do this by using each of Kevin’s five alters to represent his psychological defences. However, it’s said that Kevin has a total of 24 individual personalities. These are just the ones showcased within the film: Barry~ Represents control and social presentation (the masking of typicality). He allows Kevin to appear stable in the eyes of others. Patricia~ Represents moral order and discipline, enforcing strict rules that create structure and authority within their system. Dennis~ Represents protection through violence and lashing out, to show control and defence. Hedwig~ Represents regression to innocence, reflecting Kevin’s switch to ...

Cinematography Example ~ Visual narrative & Natural Lighting!

Image
When I initially captured this photo, my intention was to focus on the distorted reflection from the willow tree above the canal. As this frame developed  the imaged uncovered a much more broader visual narrative, led by the movements of the body of water itself. The canal puts together natural leading lines, which guide the viewers eyes across the frame while the filtered sunlight breaks through the surface, this softens the reflections and shows warmth. The restricted colour palette and the us of natural sunlight allow the surrounding environment to voice a sense of calm. This positions the shot as calm and can be seen as highly contemplative. In a cinematic context his can be linked with a atmospheric and cinematic pause; this allows a space for reflection without the need for dialogue.  This photo was framed as a wide establishing shot, this captures the transition between night and day through silhouettes and natural light. The canal is used as a natural leading line guid...

Demons in the Shadows~ short film GCSE project!

This is a short film that I directed, filmed, and edited for my GCSE media studies coursework! I was awarded a grade 6 on this piece as well as my theoretically based written exams, this piece was also featured in multiple talks and assembly's at my high school where they showcased students coursework. During my time on this course I was also regularly asked personally to be present at open evenings and subject events to showcase the course to other students and parents alongside my teachers and technicians. This particular piece of work proved to be challenging as I had a project brief to follow, scripts to produce for people taking part, style models, initial planning, and I also had to complete this project alongside my other subjects in year 11 at GCSE level.
